Christopher Nolan: Escape Artist

Each of Nolan’s films since that breakthrough courts the mass audience, while also demanding its concentration. This respect for the engagement of his fans seems integral to the director’s approach. In the era of Transformers, where much of mainstream cinema treats its audience with open contempt, Nolan’s approach amounts to a moral stance, one that audiences have responded to – helping to explain the heart-in-mouth levels of anticipation among his fans for his new film The Dark Knight Rises.

So, this shouldn’t be too surprising — someone on Reddit actually made the video game, Journey To the Center Of Hawkthorne, from the Community episode finale “Digital Estate Planning.” Sure, it was only a matter of time, but it’s pretty impressive that the turnaround was this quick.

“The road was carpeted with celery and radishes – it looked like he was a poor farmer delivering vegetables to the city. Feeling calmer, I tried to help him to walk a couple of steps. That went OK, and he stood up straight. Things were looking good – the only problem I could see was that his mouth was still bloody. I decided that that I shouldn’t show him any weakness. If I was nice to him he might take advantage, and I had no idea what he might ask for. He slowly removed his helmet, and then I bellowed at once, ‘Show me your driver’s license!’ No one who’d caused an accident would dare to say this, and I wanted to club him into submission.” Taken from Murong Xuecun’s short story the accident, which depicts a cold but realistic picture of modern Chinese society through the events directly following a car accident involving a lawyer and a farmer.
